In line with its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, Fundación AES Panamá signed a four-year Cooperation Agreement with Marea Verde, formally joining the Siete Cuencas project—one of the most relevant initiatives to reduce solid waste in Panama City.
Aligned with AES’s environmental pillar, the agreement marks a significant step toward reducing pollution in urban rivers flowing into Panama Bay, particularly single-use plastics.
“At Fundación AES Panamá, we strongly believe in building partnerships to create lasting and sustainable impact. The Siete Cuencas program is a concrete opportunity to transform our environment and promote environmental education within communities,” said Miguel Bolinaga, President of AES Panamá.
The project’s goal is to stop solid waste—especially plastics—before it reaches the ocean by installing floating barriers on the city’s main rivers: Juan Díaz, Tocumen, Matasnillo, Matías Hernández, Río Abajo, and Curundú. It also includes waste collection technologies, educational programs, and collaboration with authorities, schools, communities, and businesses.
From January to May 2025, Marea Verde intercepted over 97,300 kg of waste before reaching Panama Bay, of which more than 4,350 kg were recovered for recycling—demonstrating the potential of such interventions.
“We are excited and grateful to welcome Fundación AES Panamá to this effort to protect Panama’s rivers and bay. Together we can make a difference for a cleaner Panama,” said Mirei Endara, President of Marea Verde.
The program also includes key environmental education components like Wanda Educa, which works directly with schools, and La Casa de Wanda, an interactive center that has hosted over 6,500 visitors in less than a year—80% of them students. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about plastic consumption and promote practical citizen-led solutions.
Through this alliance, Fundación AES Panamá reaffirms its commitment to long-term initiatives that support sustainable development and build more resilient and conscious communities.
