Project name:

Capacity Building and Technical Training for Local Youth

Project location:

Panama

Sub-focus area:

Capacity Building

When AES arrived in Colon in 2016, it faced many social challenges. One of the biggest problems was the unemployment rate, in particular the youth unemployment rate which had soared to 48%. That's why the AES team implemented the “Preparandome con Energia” program to develop technical skills, improve the living conditions and increase access to better opportunities for local youth; in alignment with UNSDG 4 and 8 (Quality education and Decent Work & Economic Growth).

To achieve these goals, the team signed an agreement with the Technological University of Panama, Colon regional office, and developed four training modules in mechanics, electricity, welding and instrumentation and control. Each module lasts approximately three months with hands-on-learning classes provided three times per week.

AES granted scholarships to cover mobilization expenses to the University to support the participation and commitment of the students, and provided training on AES' values, including putting safety first.

After completing the program, the ten best students were selected to start the recruiting process for positions in the Colon power plant. After completing the recruitment process, two of them were hired to start their careers at AES and become part of the Operations Team. Today, they represent examples to follow inside their communities.

Furthermore, during a survey conducted during 2020 to a sample of the graduates, 64% stated that the program helped them place themselves in their current jobs. We expect to repeat this program in the coming years.

Impact:

More than 120 young students from the province of Colon and two new members of the AES team.
