AES Panama is the largest electricity generation company in Panama, in terms of installed capacity as well as delivered energy.
AES Panama is a subsidiary of AES Corporation, with headquarters in Arlington, Virgina, United States, and holds the 49% of shares in the operations of this generating company.
Since late 2007, AES Panama owns four hydroelectric plants with an installed capacity of 482 Megawatts: Bayano (260 MW), Estí (120 MW), La Estrella (47.2 MW), and Los Valles (54.8 MW).
Our main clients are the three energy distribution companies in Panama: Elektra Noreste, S.A., Empresa de Distribución Eléctrica Metro-Oeste, S.A., and Empresa de Distribución Eléctrica Chiriquí, S.A., which represent the 95% of the company’s energy sales. The remaining 5% corresponds to energy sales to Great Costumers, which are businesses with monthly energy consumption greater than 100 kilowatts.
AES Panama: 10 years walking with Panama's development through with responsible energy
In the past 10 year:
- Has invested more than 570 million dollars in the expansion, rehabilitation and upgrading of its hydroelectric generation units, increasing their capacity in 242 MW.
This investment represents a 71% increase in the plant’s capacity, which in 1999 was of 282 MW and it is currently of 482 MW.
- Incorporated high environmental and safety standards, having being certified in ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 since November 2006.
- Has improved its generation capacity of its hydroelectric plants in 60%, from 1,073 GWh in 2003 to 1,750 GWh as current average.
This is a reality due to:
- The expansion and rehabilitation of the Bayano central from 150 to 260 MW.
- The repowering of the units in La Estrella-Los Valles from 90 to 102 MW.
- The construction of the Esti hydroelectric plant, which added 120 new MW to the system, concluded in November 2003, in record time and zero fatalities.
- AES honors its commitments by generating clean, reliable energy.
- AES Panama, S.A. achieved the largest bond emission registered by the Comisión Nacional de Valores (Panama’s exchange commission) and Bolsa de Valores de Panamá (Panama’s Stock Exchange).
- Standards & Poor and Fitch Rating International keep the Investment Grade score (international) to its credit, based on the strength of its assets, energy delivery competitiveness, energy sales contracts and a sound financial profile.
- Provides permanent maintenance to its plants to guarantee operations at the system’s needs, which translates in a 98% availability for all generation units.
- Through 10 years, we have generated more than 14,153,695 MW/hrs for Panama, avoiding the emission of about 8,492,217 tons of CO2 to the atmosphere.
- Part of the financing for expansion of AES in Panama comes from local lenders. This proves the trust Panamanian banking institutions have in AES.
