AES Panamá - 10 Years of responsible energy development
Panama is today a prosperous country, which in the last few years has experienced a remarkable and unrecorded economic growth of approximately 11% (2007/2006). It is also an attractive country, for investors, tourists and people searching for a second home. With the Panama Canal expansion projects, through the construction of a third set of locks, many transnational companies of renowned experience have come to settle in Panama as the interest from regional investors grows. New players appear in all segments of the market. Direct foreign investments, to the third quarter of 2008, reached 1,782.2 million dollars.
In 1999, this investment reached 864.4 million dollars, and the economic growth for 1999/98 reached a 4%. The scenario was different then, and democracy lived its second period.
Back then, when it opens the possibility of investing in Panama, AES Corporation established long term operations, always looking into increasing development and leadership in this industry.
Through major investments in rehabilitation projects and the construction of the Esti hydroelectric power plant, finished in 2003, AES added 242 new MW to the national system, increasing its installed capacity in a 71%, from 282 MW to 482 MW.
This way, today we celebrate 10 years of investing in Panama, so that the clean, reliable energy AES supplies, may contribute with the necessary momentum to lead the country to where it is today, being a fundamental pillar for the development and economic bonanza this country experiences today.
Never ceasing, and always looking into ways to continue contributing, we have accepted new challenges, as the construction of the Changuinola I hydroelectric project, and we continue searching for energy alternatives that can provide for a sustainable development for the country.
Every and each one of our co-workers have been key players of the history we can tell today, and will have the responsibility continuing generating responsible energy for the years to come. |
